As the distribution of velocity in thermal equilibrium is spherically symmetric, the probability distribution of velocity along any direction (say z direction, the direction) is given by
$\displaystyle P(v_z)dv_z = \left(\frac{m}{2\pi kT} \right)^{1/2}\exp\left(-\frac{mv_z^2}{2kT} \right) dv_z$
Exercise:

Show that the expression above for the probability distribution is properly normalized.
