Lecture 29: Physical basis of remote sensing ( Radiometry )
Bidirectional Reflectance Factor (BDRF)
  • BDRF is defined as the ratio of radiance reflected into a particular direction to radiance that would be reflected into the same direction by a perfectly Lambertian surface illuminated in an identical manner where a perfectly Lambertian reflector surface has same radiance in all directions. It is given by the following expression:

  • It is a frequently used & measured quantity, but not a unique property of sample and is dependent on instrument configuration used to make measurement, since its value depends on (cos θ ' d ω ' ), the projected solid angle of reflection.
