Lecture 13 : GPS Measurements Techniques II
Practical GPS Survey field procedures

Practical GPS survey methods are generally carrier based and are categorized as follows.

Static Surveys
  • Receiver must resolve phase ambiguity with each occupation hence sessions are longer (more accurate at the cost of long occupation). Various methods under this category are:
    • Traditional static
    • Rapid Static
    • Reoccupation (pseudo-kinematic and pseudo-static)
Kinematic (dynamic) Surveys
  • These surveys have short durations at each occupation as these resolve ambiguity once at the beginning of session. Then by keeping a lock on satellites, it maintains that solution for rest of the work (short occupation at the cost of accuracy). Various methods under this category are:
    • Stop and Go
    • Traditional kinematic
    • Kinematic On The Fly (KOTF)
    • Real Time Kinematic (RTK)
