Descriptive statements and performative statements have an overlapping nature. We cannot find the real distinction between the two varieties of statement. Further, he discovered a theory named as "speech act", which states that all the utterances are 'speech acts' and this view may be considered in a wider perspective. He claims that statements of all sorts involve 'facts'. And, in both performative and constative statements, we find "fact". Since performative statements are judged as happy or unhappy, constative sentences can also be judged as happy or unhappy.
There are certain statements which considered as performative on the one hand, and constative on the other hand. For example;
- I believe that a cat is on the mat.
- The cat is on the mat but I don't believe it.
- I promise but I do not intend.
- I borrow money but I do not have the intention to repay.
In these statements we find some sorts of resemblance, and by virtue of that resemblance which is a common factor, we can describe the two varieties of statement; constantive and performative. If we consider the second statement, then it is neither a self-contradiction, nor a meaningless statement. But it is outrageous. It is the case of insincerity, as a result we feel this statement is odd. "Insincerity" is often applied to performative statement, but here it is applied to constative statement.
