Module 8 : Surface Chemistry
Lecture 37 : Surface Characterization Techniques
37.2

Classical Methods:

(b) BET equation

Example 37.2:

Slope = = 2.88 10-2 cm-3
2.88 10-2 cm-3 = (C-1)
                           = (C- 1) 9.87 10-4 cm-3
(C- 1) = 2.88 10-2 / 9.87x 10-4 = 29.18
      C = 30.18
Further , = 9.87 10-4 cm-3
Vmono = 1 / C 9.87 10-4 cm-3
           = 1/ 30.18 9.87 10-4

           = 33.57 cm3
           = 0.03357 dm3

Number of N2 molecules = (0.03357/22.4) 6.02 1023
                                     = 9.022 1020 molecules
The total area = 9.022 1020 16.2 10-20 m2
= 146.156 m2/g (contact area of one N2 molecule =16.2 10-20 m2 )

Now we shall consider the instrumental methods. These may be further classified as spectroscopic methods and microscopic methods.
