Module 5 : Major Sources of Water Pollution

Lecture 1 : Eutrophication

Eutrophication

• Eutrophication is the process by which a body of water acquires a high concentration of nutrients, especially phosphates and nitrates. These typically promote excessive growth of algae which is called “Algal Bloom”. As the algae die and decompose, high levels of organic matter and the decomposing organisms deplete the water of available oxygen, causing the death of other organisms, such as fish.

• Eutrophication can occur naturally. It is considered as a natural ageing process of the water body but human interference has paced up the degradation process

• The natural process is called “Natural Eutrophication” and Eutrophication by human interference where large amounts of pollutants are released into water because of societies can be termed as “Cultural Eutrophication”
