Module 5 : Major Sources of Water Pollution

Lecture 1 : Eutrophication

Effects of Eutrophication

Water Pollution

• Pollution of water because of addition of poisonous substances into water

• Types of water pollution

1. Pollution by Point Sources: Contamination of water bodies by substances released from a single, identifiable source such as a pipe- Most common example is the industrial pollution where a lot many harmful substances are released into water bodies.

2. Pollution by nonPoint Sources: Contamination of water bodies by substances that do not come from a discrete, specified source.

• Pollution by water from farmlands that mixes in streams is a common example for this.

• Another kind of pollution is ground water pollution when polluted water at the surface sinks into the earth to form ground water.

1. Point source pollution-Pollutants mixing in water bodies

1.1. A pattern of pollutants getting mixed in a water body

2. Waste water from farms contaminates water bodies
