Given any non-zero point $z = x+iy$, the principal value MATH of the argument of $z$ can be computed as follows:

where $\arctan(t)$, ( MATH) is the principal value of the arc tangent of $t$ for any real number $t$.
If $z$ is not a negative real number then MATH. If $z$ is a negative real number then MATH.
