Module 2 : THEORIES OF MEANING & TRUTH

Presentation - 03

The Correspondence Theory

This theory suggests that truth depends on a relation between a belief ora piece of knowledge and a fact or an event of the world. When we possess a belief, it is about the physical or mental (psychological) world. And, the belief is made true or false not by other beliefs but by corresponding to something available in the empirical or mentalworld. Let us take two pertinent and distinct examples to clarify this notion.

Example-1: Mohan believes that the classroom HSB335 of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) of India contains a green board and a projector. His belief is true only when the said objects are available in the classroom. In a sense, we can correspond to these objects of the classroom. But if he believes that there is a goat in the above stated classroom and in reality there is no goat in the classroom, then his belief turns out to be false. It is so because his belief does not correspond to the animal 'goat' in the classroom.

Example-2: Susama believes that she had headache yesterday. Her belief is made true if she had headache indeed yesterday. This example is about the mental world, whereas the prior example was about the physical world.
