Module 2 : THEORIES OF MEANING & TRUTH

Presentation - 03

Now let us switch over to the theories of truth and find out their significance in the context of natural language.

Theories of Truth

'Meaning' and 'truth' are inseparably and inalienably related with each other. They are like two sides of the same coin. Knowing of 'meaning'of a proposition and ignoring its 'truth condition' or having the inverse relation in the ambiance of philosophy of language is like identifying a coin by looking at its one side and not bothering about its other side, which questions the genuineness (accuracy) of the coin. The nature of meaning and the treatment towards 'truth-condition' have already been discussed in the earlier passages in a succinct manner. Now we shall focus our discussion on the issues such as: 'what is truth?', 'are there criteria to determine the truth?', and 'what are the theories of truth philosophers at large have offered to the study of 'philosophy of language?'

There are three theories of truth generally propounded by philosophers. They are as follows:

  1. The correspondence theory
  2. The coherence theory
  3. The pragmatic theory
