Lecture 7 : Globalization

The processes underlying globalization are economic, international and information-based.

The underlying economic-political ideology of neoliberalism proposes no restrictions on cultural imports and national cultural forms, encourages global mergers and joint ventures and discourages cultural autonomy to nations. Diana Crane remarks on this perception:

“the cultural equivalent of the neoliberal model of economic globalisation perceives globalisation as a process that is producing globally transmitted cultures which emanate from a hegemonic “centre”, consisting of a few dominant nations, and which reduce the cultural autonomy of less powerful countries that constitute a weak ‘periphery.”
