Lecture 2 : Identity

However, this not to suggest that identity is chaotic. Giddens argues that even as identity is dynamic, we manage to create a coherent and continuous sense of a narrative of the self and its identity.

And it is a narrative that has to have some meaning and perhaps ultimate value for us. And that meaning and meaningfulness emanates from a sense of that narrative of self as being coherent, as biographical and continuous. Therefore we understand identity as at once:

We defend identity whether individual or collective from misrepresentation by people or by other groups. Indeed, when we look at identity politics, it is a complex issue and yet at the same time it is something which is quite inevitable perhaps owing to our propensity to defend our collective identity.
