Module 2 : Key Concepts

Lecture 2 : Identity

As a concept, identity as compared to subjectivity is a framework and it is external . It is within the framework of social identity that one more or less develops one's own identity.

How is identity external? Identity, when compared to subjectivity, is something that is given to one from the outside.

It is culture that is the arbiter of one's identity. So subjectivity is the constitution of one as a subject, it is about how we experience ourselves, while identity is how we see ourselves through how others see us.
