Lecture 2 : Identity


Identity is an important key concept in Cultural Studies and it lends itself to other key concepts and permeates almost any aspect of Cultural Studies. Some of these concepts related to identity are:

The discourse of identity is tied to the discourse of class, of ethnicity, discourses of gender, race and sexuality. One can therefore refer to one's class or sexual identity, or one's racial, ethnic or gender identity. Barker further relates identity to emotion. He defines identity as “an emotionally charged discursive description of ourselves that is subject to change” (see Barker).

The sociologist Anthony Giddens considers identity a project . It is a project in the sense that it is something on which both the individual and the society keep working.
