	Stability against piping failure or clay bursting
	Consider the following fig. which shows the clay bursting phenomenon.

	The cohesive force along the failure plane resists the movement of the soil mass upwards and therefore acts as a resistive force. The factor of safety for clay bursting should be more than 1.3.
