3.6.4.3 Carbonylation
Iron carbonyl complexes have been used for various reactions, the most obvious of which is carbonylation. Collman's reagent prepared by the reduction of pentacarbonyliron(0) by sodium naphthalenide can be used for preparation of aldehydes and ketones. In this two step process, Collman's reagent (Na2 Fe(CO)4) is first treated with an alkyl halide and subsequently with CO and an alkene to form a ketone (Scheme 4).
