Vapor movement tendencies that may be expected between soil horizons differing in temperature and moisture. In (a) the tendencies more or less negate each other, but in (b) they are coordinated and considerable vapor transfer might be possible if the liquid water in the soil capillaries does not interfere.

Low conductivity in dry surface retards the evaporative loss of soil water.
