Infrared spectroscopy

- bonds vibrate with characteristic frequencies.

- absorption of IR energy occurs only when there is a match between the wavelength of the radiation and the wavelength of the bond vibration.

- the position of the IR absorption depends on the strength of the bond, the masses of the bonded atoms and the type of vibration observed
