Typical XRD pattern of amorphous materials:
Calculate the average crystallite size?
From the peak analysis around 2θ = 43°, we get 2θ = 42.935°;
FWHM = 5.388°.
The average crystallite turns out to be 1.585 nm
When the XRD peak of a given material exhibits a broad peak with FWHM more than 5°, then the material is said to have typically amorphous structure.
Quiz 4:
(Q4.1). What is the minimum average crystallite size can be calculated using XRD pattern? Why?
(Q4.2). Can XRD pattern show assymmetric peaks? If yes, describe the conditions!
