Module 3 :
Lecture 18 : Polymers for Mechanical Design

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

  • Linear chain, different from PE due to the presence of atactically spread Chlorine
  • Rigid relatively hard, mixed with Plasticizers to make Pipes, Cable Covering, Fabric of Plastic
    Raincoat, Shoe soles, Inflatable Chains
  • Chlorine Inhibits Combustion

Polypropylene (PP)

  • Linear Polymer, isotactic, used in crystalline form, Tm > 160oC
  • Side Chains (Methyl) increase fatigue and impact resistance
  • Used for Crates, Fans, TV and Radio Cabinets
  • A copolymer Polypropyleneethylene (EPM) in low ratio increases impact strength, high and random make it elastomer

Polystyrene (PS)

  • Linear Chain with Bulky side Phenyl group, smooth finish
  • Use for injection molding components, light fittings, ball point pen barrel
  • PS with rubber particles increase impact resistance, casings for cameras etc.
  • Susceptible to Stress Corrosion by detergents
  • Styrofoam for foam packaging and insulation Styrene
