Module 3 :
Lecture 18 : Polymers for Mechanical Design

Polyethylene (PE)

  • Low Molecular weight – LDPE (918-935 Kg/m3) linear with branches and HDPE (linear)
  • LDPE – flexible, tough, good chemical resistance (60% cryst.)
  • HDPE – stronger, stiffer, (90% cryst).
  • LDPE – films, sheeting, bags, pen tube, wire & cable insulation, shrink wrapping
  • HDPE – piping, toys, carrier bag
  • Stabilization by butyl rubber and Glass Fiber
  • Products based on HDPE and LDPE are indicated by the following icons.

Polyethylene Terepthalate (PET)

  • A thermoplastic* polymer made of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid or dimethylterephthalate.

  • Tg around 750 C, semi crystalline to amorphous
  • Good transparency

  • Heat resistance due to high heat deflection temperature

  • Very low gas permeability and water vapor transmittance

  • Excellent chemical resistance and anti-hydrolysis characteristics

  • Zero flavor adsorption

  • Blockage of ultraviolet-rays provides good protection for contents

  • Recycling Possible

Application of PET and PP

PET and PPs are mostly used as containers and storage boxes.
