Module 3 :
Lecture 18 : Polymers for Mechanical Design

Polycarbonate (PC)

  • Linear Chain, well below Tg at room temperature, amorphous
  • Condensation Polymerization
  • Tough, Stiff, Strong and Transparent
  • Feeding Bottle, Safety Helmet, Cups and Saucers

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

  • Brittle Styrene Acrylonitrile SAN polymer toughened with polybutadiene, range –40-120oC
  • Properties depend on the ratio of Acrylonitrile, Butadiene and Styrene, A-Chemical resistance, heat stability, B-Toughness, Srigidity and processability
  • amorphous – tough, stiff, abrasion resistant
  • Injection Molded, extruded, thermoformed

Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)

  • Acrylic, Transparent Thermoplastic, linear chains with bulky side groups
  • Stiff strong material with outstanding weather resistance
  • Light fittings, Canopies, Lenses for Car lights, opaque varieties for domestic bath, shower cabinet, basin, cisterns Relative Comparison of Thermoplastics
