If $n$ is odd then any continuous map $f:S^n\longrightarrow S^n$ has a fixed point or sends a point to its antipode. Hence the pair $\{f({\bf x}), {\bf x}\}$ cannot be linearly independent for every ${\bf x} \in S^n$.
