Given topological spaces $X$ and $Y$ one is often not interested in the class of all continuous maps $f : X \longrightarrow Y$ but a restricted class of continuous functions satisfying some ``side conditions'' such as mapping a given subset $A$ of $X$ into a given subset $B$ of $Y$.
