Dissatisfaction with modernization
India is in the advanced stage of becoming modern after the Western model of modernization and development. More is the society modernized more vivid become the problems of modernizing India and also the problems with the process of modernization itself. This has produced a small intellectual tradition that aims at exploring alternatives to modernity. Their argument begins with articulation of the sense of dissatisfaction with the present form of developments and then they look for various alternatives including one of going back to roots. A number of scholars have contributed to this from diverse angles. However, there is very limited work on this in sociology or economics: what kind of alternative social institutions can be thought of to remedy the ills of modern civilization? Is tradition the answer? Which tradition? What if there are multiple traditions? Are there not several modern interpretations of tradition? Let us look at some interpretations of tradition.
