Modern constructions of tradition
Writings of Anand K. Coomaraswamy, Louis Dumont, A.K. Saran, G.S. Ghurye and several others present an understanding of new possibilities keeping in view the religious and spiritual texts of ancient India. They have not had any impact on statesmen and social activists who influenced the course of history in India, however. In reality, to explore the alternatives, it is important to ask first: who are dissatisfied with the processes of modernization and Westernization? Why? What relationship do they hold with the pre-colonial social structure? Is there only one construction of tradition available to us or there are multiple constructions of traditions which offer divergent critiques of modernity? Where do we go from here?
