Module 4 : Culture Industries, Cultural Forms

Lecture 8 : Cultural Policy

The issue of cultural policy came in with the issue of the politics of difference . If race, gender, sexuality and class are built into cultural forms, then the politics of difference is the motivation behind cultural policy. A way of describing cultural policy could also be called policing . Therefore if we are to be sensitive to the issues of race, gender, sexuality and class then there have to be policies that are going to see that certain races, genders, sexualities and classes are not misrepresented, so that the hegemonic dominant order does not continue to make these marginalized all the time. This is one way in which the politics of difference has contributed to what we may call contemporary cultural policy studies.
