Module 4 : Culture Industries, Cultural Forms

Lecture 1 : The Culture Industry

There are, however, critics of this school of thought on culture. They argue that it is not true that there is no resistance to attempts of the culture industry to achieve ‘sameness', ‘standardization', ‘regulation' and ‘deception'. It is also not true that consumers capitulate easily to technological domination. There is diversity in the form of interactions between diverse cultural and art forms and there is resistance to the process of entertainment as extensions of mechanized labour. They state that we are therefore not merely passive consumers of products of culture industry.

However, it is a strong argument that to be entertained in the capitalist order means to be in agreement with its ethos. We need to critically examine and understand the products of the culture industry in order to understand how mass culture manipulates us and predetermines our responses.
