In how many different ways may we look at space in Cultural Studies? We usually see space as place, as a lived arena, as topography and geography, but in Cultural Studies, as various critics have shown, space is more abstract than that, since it is a theoretical term and key concept for us. For instance, space is also symbolic and is encoded in signs and signifying practices and therefore is also represented in language and discourse. As a site, it is invested with power and politics. Space is also highly metaphorical since we speak of spaces of symbolic contestations. Space may at times be quite heavily invested with sentiment, emotion and identity construction.
