The next important concepts are base and superstructure :
The base is the infrastructure or economic base of society and comprises the forces of production and the relationships of production. In a mode of production that is feudal for instance, land becomes the most important force of production, and as relationships of production are concerned these are marked by the two binaries of owner of land and the tenant or the serf who works for the land.
Over the base there arises what Marx called the superstructure (an architectural metaphor is being used here) which comprises political / ideological relationships .
The economic base gives rise to certain political institutions and ideological relationships though not in a deterministic way. It is rather that the base influences the superstructure.
