Lecture 9 : Marxism Part 2

Marx gave seminal importance to the concept of alienation . Man is a creative worker. With the emergence of private property however man becomes alienated in the following crucial ways from:

a)  the product of his labour

b)  the act of producing

c)  himself as a producer

d)  other producers

In particular when we consider assembly line production we see that it is usually not a creative activity. Work is monotonous or repetitive. In the very act of producing, a worker is alienated from himself as a producer. In the whole production process the worker is further separated or alienated from other producers. As the worker is alienated from the very product he / she enables to be produced, the system is exploitative. This exploitation is sought to be hidden by the owners of the means of production by their justification of the whole production process including the relations of production as the best arrangement.
