A Möbius strip is a one-sided 3-D object. Very roughly a surface is orientable if it has two sides so that, for example, is it possible to paint it with two different colors. A sheet of paper or the surface of a sphere is examples of orientable surfaces. A Möbius strip is a non-orientable surface: you can build one with a strip of paper (twist the strip and glue end together to form a ring) and verify that it has only one side: it is not possible to paint it with two colours. In power-transmission belt the half-twist in the belt is intended to make the belt last longer and wear more evenly.
The International Recycling Symbol (Plate 20A & B), designed by Gary Anderson is based on a Möbius Strip. It has inspired large number of creative people to innovate new concepts and product design. Automobile engine belt (plate 20C) is designed based on the same principle.
