Colloidal systems could be destabilized by the addition of ions having a charge opposite to that of the colloid. The coagulating power of ions increased in the ratio of 1:10:1000 as the valence of the ions increased in the ratio from 1 to 2 to 3. This is called Schulze-Hardy rule.
