Module II : Analysis and design of concrete pavements
Lecture 5 : Design of tie bars

Recapitulation

  • The spacing of tie bar is estimated from the area of the steel required per unit length of the longitudinal joint. The area of steel required is estimated by equating the maximum tensile force in the tie bar system with the force required to overcome frictional force between the bottom of the adjoining pavement slab and the soil subgrade.
  • The length of the tie bar is estimated by equating the tensile force developed in a tie bar with the bond strength between the tie bar and the concrete slab.
