  1. Communication signals: The signal received by a communication receiver is generally corrupted by noise. The signal transmitted may the digital data like video or speech and the channel may be electric conductors, optical fiber or the space itself. The signal is modified by the channel and corrupted by unwanted disturbances in different stages, collectively referred to as noise.

          These signals can be described with the help of probability and other concepts in statistics. Particularly the signal under observation is considered as a realization of a random process or a stochastic process. The terms random processes,  stochastic processes and random signals are used synonymously.

          A deterministic signal is analysed in the frequency-domain through Fourier series and Fourier transforms. We have to know how random signals can be analysed in the frequency domain.
