Lecture 6 : Neutron diffraction

Magnetic scattering from GdCu2:

Martin Rotter, University of Oxford

Some key differences:

• Magnetic scattering involves the interaction of the neutron's magnetic moment with that of an atomic electron → EM not strong interaction

• Both the nature of the scattering and the object that the neutron scatters from are different.

• The form of the scattering is therefore quite different.

Quiz 6:

(Q6.1). Does the diffraction information vary with the sources? Why?

(Q6.2). What are disvantages of neutron diffraction over X--ray one?

(Q6.3). What are possible structures detectable by neutron diffraction?
