h and p Versions of Finite Element Method
A finite element method, in which the accuracy of the approximate solution is increased by decreasing the mesh size h while keeping the order p of the approximation constant, is called as the h variation of the finite element method. On the other hand, the finite element method, in which the accuracy of the approximate solution is improved by increasing the order p of the approximation while keeping the mesh size h fixed, is called as the p -version of the finite element method.
In p -version of the finite element method, the rate of convergence of the finite element solution to the exact solution is exponential.
