Module 7 : CNC Programming and Industrial Robotics

Assignments

Lecture 1

  1. What is the difference between a CNC system and a DNC system?

  2. Explain the control of tool movements in a 3-axes CNC system.

Lecture 2

  1. Write a short note on ‘G81 Drilling canned cycle'.

  2. Write an efficient CNC part program to drill 32 holes in a machine component as shown in the figure 1. Draw the sketch of workpiece and show the tool path. Explain in brief the important functions used in the CNC code.

Figure 1 A component to be drilled.

Lecture 3

  1. What is ‘Ramp-on and Ramp-off' action used in a CNC milling operation?

  2. Figure 1 shows a component to be contour finished on Vertical Machining Center. Write the CNC part program. Show the tool path and explain the important preparatory functions.

Figure 2 A component to be contour finished.

Lecture 4

  1. Write a short note on “Tool nose radius compensation”.

  2. Write a CNC part program to turn a machine component as shown in the figure 3. Figure shows the dimensions of required contour. Size of raw stock is Dia. 90 x 140 mm. Both the end faces are turned. Prepare the process plan. Draw the sketch of workpiece and show the tool path. Highlight the important functions used in the CNC code.

Figure 3 A component to be turned.

Lecture 5

  1. Describe the types of joints used in a Robot configuration with neat sketches.

  2. What are the various types of drives used in a Robotic system? Compare them.

Lecture 6

  1. List the various end-effectors that can be employed in a robotic system and explain the significance of each of them.

  2. Discuss the applications of robots in manufacturing automation.
