The result is that most of the time people are unhappy. They think that they are competing for limited resources. Most often they perceive deprivation. They also perceive that they are living in a corrupt society. Table 7.2 shows the reported barriers faced by people in attainment of various goals in life. A few things are evident from the table:

People are more worried about the macro level factors which are primarily the result of man’s action.

Among all the barriers economic barriers are at the top.

Decay of morality or lack of values is a major concern.

There are less complaints from family than from society.

In sociological literature there has not been one view of relationship between man and society. There are multiple paradigms, theories and models. In the next lecture we will see what the theories say on the relationship between man and society. Yet, one conclusion is inescapable: discussion of human values has to contain both man and society. Failure on the part of any one of them will fail human destiny.
