These observations make me cynical. Then JV looked like a course of mathematics of virtues in which problems could be formulated and solved using certain axioms and theorems, a course internally consistent but far away from real life. But then I tell myself that in value education we are talking about values, the ideas and systems of ideas, that must be promoted, and not the ideas which are working. We talk about values because the facts are different and facts are not acceptable to us.
Box 39.1: True but Impractical (?) Philosophy |
JV has produced an internally consistent and logical framework of human happiness. It has also made a beginning in the form of workshops and courses in certain professional and technical institutions. There is no doubt that the true happiness demands trust and harmonious living. Yet, in the workshops students have often said: JV is excellent but in today’s world one has to make compromises and adjustments. One cannot be 100% honest even if he wants to be. The system is like that. Some people equate JV with a kind of religious and spiritual path; they adhere to JV in the same way as the believers adhere to religious or spiritual ideas. |
