Ethical is more than legal
Sometimes ethical is confused with legal. Law is only one part of moral prescriptions. Ethics goes beyond legality. When one signs a professional or business contract there he is asked only to follow a legal contract. He is not asked to sign to follow ethical principles. Yet, but everyone expects him to follow moral codes also as a person. In one of his articles Chaturvedi (2006) writes:
JRD Tata is stated to have put a pertinent question to his Chartered Accountant who advised a particular approach to taxes, saying that it was not illegal. JRD asked him “But is it ethical?” That bears the testimony to the question of values in society and how they should be consciously promoted through education from early stages so that the system turns out not only proficient or capable politicians, administrators, managers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, businessmen, industrialists, teachers etc. but also conscientious and enlightened citizens. |
