Module 9: Postmodernization and emancipation
Lecture 26: Emancipation: Modern and Postmodern

I think that in this context emancipation means picking up the cause of one or more vulnerable sections of society. The theoreticians identify particular groups, understand their problems, develop theory to comprehend their problems and pursue their interests, and advocate their cause. No claim is made for the objective truthfulness of this theory. Theory is important just because it helps in advocating for the interests of the particular groups. It is no more an exercise in arriving at the absolute Truth. With regard to the ideas of happiness and a perfect social order Table 26.1 exhibits the ideas and possibilities of emancipation in the traditional, modern and postmodern frameworks in India. The table is only illustrative and there are several possibilities of interpretation and reclassification. It shows that in the postmodern period certain neo-social movements, less defined by social structure and more by identity, such as women’s movements, environmental movements, civil liberties movements and peace movements have acquired greater prominence. Class conflict has become less important although class differences have continued. The theorist has to identify and promote certain identities. The theorist, therefore, becomes a part of their movement. Movements and not the experts need new theory.
