Conclusion

In the Indian context, there are women’s publishing houses that publish women’s writings in original as well as translation. Zubaan, Women Unlimited, and formerly Kali for Women, were active in publishing translations of women writers from all over India. It did manage to give a platform to women from all sections of society, ensuring that their voices are heard. However, these translations cannot be categorized as feminist, but rather as gendered translations. What feminist translation does is to emphasize the “speaking voice of the translator and her active role in the translation process, and a willing recognition that translators are interventionist” (Simon). To this extent, feminist translation seems to underline a very important aspect of the process of translation itself – which is that of recognizing that translations are guided by the translator’s personality and understanding that very often cultural differences separate the original and the translation.
