Module 6: Urban Planning and Design
Lecture 41: The Modern City in Post-Independent India: the case-study of Chandigarh

Evenson had commented that Chandigarh is perhaps a lesson in the limitations of planning. She points out that the indigenous building tradition of India is defensible because it is aware of the realities of the Indian climate and way of life than maybe found in the perception of trained planners. The contemporary standards—both physical and aesthetic had developed in the West for a given climate, technology and way of life. Those principles have been accepted in the developing societies regardless of appropriateness, even as they were being modified in the places of origin. Critics point out that the master plan of Chandigarh suffers from this problem however visually dramatic design of the capitol complex might be.
