New Town (The Irish Town)

The upper classes claimed that the condition was bad in the old town whereas in the new town the conditions were better.

But Engles shows that they were no better in the new town as well though they had little more of planning features such as straight roads and courtyards.

The area was situated on the bank of a narrow, coal black stinking river. The whole area was hidden by high parapet and inside what greeted the visitor was revolting filth and squalor.

Though these areas were somewhat planned they had extremely poor ventilation.

There were some gutters but at the same time there were cellars which were wet, damp and dirty.
Space itself was a commodity and therefore crammed in an unimaginable density.
