In the last lecture we saw how representation is problematised in Cultural Studies. Some scholars of Cultural Studies even argue that the very process of representation is one of misrepresentation and distortion. Dani Cavallaro for instance asserts:
“Misrepresentation plays a central role in the construction of personal and collective identities. What we think we are often a product of how our culture misrepresents us and how we misrepresent ourselves…. Distortion and misrepresentation are not secondary or accidental aspects of human experience. We do not perceive the world as it is but rather as mediated by various filters and channels: forms of language and forms of interpretation that do not mirror the world but actually construct it, thereby perpetuating or challenging its ideologies” ( Critical and Cultural Theory ).
