The surface of lotus leaf has billions of tiny contact points protecting the surface from water and dust. The amazing characteristic of lotus leaf structure has naturally raised curiosity among designers. Overall, the surface area of the leaf is enormous, but the billions of tiny contact points (plate 5C) don't allow the contact angle between the surface and water droplets to reach the critical angle where their surface tension would break. As a result, the water remains in "beads" and simply rolls off the leaf, (collecting any dust or dirt debris which similarly doesn't penetrate the leaf surface along the way).
Rolling small quantity of water on a lotus-structured surface (fabric) would attract dirt particles while rolling on the surface. The very little amount of dirt that accumulates on the surface may be cleaned with negligent amount of water. The nano- structured surface would have "Self-cleaning" mechanism where very little dirt particles do not stick to these nano-surfaces. Therefore, the need for laundry detergents and frequent cleaning is greatly reduced. The water consumption for cleaning may be reduced to great extent. The water would be saved and eco-friendly condition is created.
Conclusion
Nature has endless paradigms to offer. It needs keen observation and innovative concept to help the human civilization. Thus a sense of interaction between man-nature would create healthier world. The mother-nature can teach us endless things to build healthy environment. |
