Smoking is a habit that human beings are addicted to since the beginning of human history. Hence, varieties of smoking devices are designed and manufactured in wood, metal and terra-cotta. Traditional Hookah pipe (plate 5A & 5B) and traditional Hookah design is being refined during the Mughal Period (plate 5C) following the same principle of paradigm. Popularly wood and terra-cotta are used for making pipe (plate 5D) in the rural community. A hollow pipe allows the smoke to pass through. Having a strainer installed at the mouth of the pipe filters (passage) the smoke before inhaling.
Conclusion
Design concepts are converted into three-dimensional or two-dimensional forms. If one tries to follow the evolution of basic forms through centuries it shows that man has always explored its very basic essence in form. As Platonic Solids and Cubism shows the beauty of basic forms ancient art and design experienced the same in various vernaculars. Perhaps some time because of certain limitations man restricted their creative expressions through minimalistic approach. In fact such technical limitations have inspired man to create innovative design. |
