A ball will roll because its form has no elements protruding obstruction that would hinder with its movement. At the same time if we have such projections like arms and legs, we can protect from such risks as injury or cold by drawing them close to the body and tucking our head in, forming a ball. Animals do apply both by closing or extending its body depending on its advantages.
Exercise #01Find the use of ball paradigm in nature and make a concept design
applying the same in a product design.
A disc is something flat and circular. Geometrically many discs are cylinders (plate 3A) with a small height relative to diameter, while other discs such as Frisbees have rounded edges. A flexible bearing between two moving parts may function similar to ball joints. The discs in human anatomy are between the vertebrae (plate 3C) of the human spine. It provides both cushioning and a lubricated surface that permits flexible movement of the vertebrae relative to each other. We are usually unaware of the function of disc unless it is damaged, causing pain or even paralysis as they press against the spinal column.
