Sketching the Shapes:

After observe the basic shape of a given object we can start doing sketches of various physical object from our day today life e.g. first lightly sketch the basic shape of this angular wedge of cheese shown bellow.

Laying in Values:

Here the light is coming from the left, so the cast shadows fall to the right, tightly shade in the middle values on the side of the cheese, and place the darkest values in holes where the light does not hit.
